MAPLE VALLEY YOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PROGRAMS

We have a group for every student at every playing level.  Our programs and schedules are designed to help students transition seamlessly and confidently to higher level playing groups as they develop their musical skills.​​
SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

This orchestra is open to string, brass, woodwind and percussion players with 4+ years playing experience who are looking for the challenge of performing master works of composers such as Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky.  Students will work in a large group and sectionals in each rehearsal. Symphony Orchestra performs 3 concerts per season as well as for several community based events.  Symphony students are eligible for Tour Orchestra.  Season is September - May.

Suggested playing level:  ability to read and play music in all key signatures and all rhythm patterns.

JR. SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

This orchestra is open to string, brass, woodwind and percussion players with 3-5 years playing experience.  Musical goals include improving pitch and rhythm accuracy in increasingly complex keys and rhythm patterns.  Students will work in a large group and sectionals in each rehearsal.  This group has 3 concerts per season.  Students with exemplary work ethic will be invited to audition for Tour Orchestra.  Season is September - May.

Suggested playing level:  ability to read and play music in C, 4 sharp and 4 flat key signatures with increasingly complex rhythm patterns such as triplets and sixteenth patterns.

PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA

​This orchestra is open to string,  brass, and woodwind players with 1-3 years of experience and string players with 2-4 years of playing experience. Musical goals include learning to play comfortably in sharp and flat key signatures with more complex rhythm patterns. Students will work in a large group and wind/percussion and string sectionals in each rehearsal.  This group has 2 concerts per season.  Season is October - May.

Suggested playing level:  ability to read and play music in C, 3 sharp and 3 flat key signatures, 4/4, 3/4, 2/4 and 6/8 time signatures.  Ability to read and perform increasingly complex rhythm patterns.

DEBUT ORCHESTRA

This Orchestra is open to string players with 1-3 years of playing experience.  Our string specialist will help students develop skills in playing independent parts in a music ensemble.  This group has 2 concerts per season. Season is October - May.

Suggested Playing Level:  ability to read key signatures: C,G,D,F, and B-flat as well as 4/4, 3/4, 2/4 time signatures and simple rhythms.

DOWN BEAT PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE

This class is designed for the budding percussionist or the student who is playing another instrument and would like to learn orchestral percussion.  Students 5th grade and up will learn fundamental stick and mallet control and music reading skills.  Students will be given professional instruction on orchestral percussion instruments & drum set.  Season is September - May.

No musical experience is necessary.  Students with musical experience will transition into other orchestra groups as they are ready and have the percussion skills to add to their musical ability.  All students will have the opportunity to perform with orchestral groups.

UP BEAT PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE

New for the 2019-2020 Season! Up Beat Percussion is open to percussionists with one school year or more of playing experience. Students will work on technique, be introduced to playing orchestral percussion intruments and perform with our Philharmonia Orchestra. Students who have participated in MVYSO's Down Beat Percussion may enter this group withouth auditioning. All other students must audition.  Season is September - May.

AMBASSADOR ENSEMBLES

MVYSO's Ambassador Ensembles are elite ensembles that meet for one hour before each symphony rehearsals. Ambassador ensembles learn what it's like to be "Gig" musicians as they often perform in the community for events where it is not feasible to have a full orchestra.   Season is September - June.

Ambassador groups include:

ELITE STRINGS - for string players
ELITE WIND QUINTET - for flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet and french horn
ELITE BRASS QUINTET - For brass players (starts in November)

Ambassador ensembles meet on Mondays from 5:45 - 6:45 p.m.

Participation Requirements:
  • Must be a member of MVYSO
  • Open auditions for Jr. Symphony & Symphony Players
  • Signed commitment form required at the time of audition.
  • Placement is based on audition and ability to commit to rehearsal and performance schedule
  • $150.00 annual fee

TOUR ORCHESTRA

​MVYSO's Tour Orchestra will represent the MVYSO and the community of Maple Valley in community based events such as the Opening Day of the Maple Valley Farmer's Market and Maple Valley's 4th of July Fireworks.  Tour Orchestra will also represent MVYSO and our community on a 2-day bus tour or other travel.  Rehearsals will be on Mondays from 7-9 p.m. following our regular season.  Our 2020 tour will be to Disneyland! JAM CLUB - SPECIAL NEEDS MUSIC PROGRAMS

JAM CLUB BEATS - SPECIAL NEEDS MUSIC PROGRAM
2 Classes
  • Middle School and High School Age
  • Elementary School Age

This group is designed to be most successful for students grades 2 and up who are able to participate in a more structured classroom setting. Music and social skills learned in this group will be presented sequentially, building on knowledge and skills gained in previous sessions. Group participants will build social and musical skills in order to play simple music together, culminating in several performances throughout the year. Activities include movement to music, learning to play different rhythms on percussion instruments, reading music notation, group singing and social skill development. Other participant and group goals may be developed in collaboration with parents and caregivers as the year progresses.

Suggested prerequisites for participation*:
• Complete a 2 step task with minimal redirection
• Attend to a 5- to 10-minute activity with minimal redirection

This group is designed to be most successful for students grades 2 and up who have less experience in music and/or group settings. Students will learn basic social and musical skills as we move to music, explore percussion instruments, discover our singing voices and practice basic social skills through music. Our staff will work with parents, behavior therapists and caregivers to help each succeed, and reinforce what the student is working on at home and in school.

Suggested prerequisites for participation*:
• Current or past experience in a group activity (i.e. school, church youth group, social skills group, etc.)

JAM CLUB - TRANSITIONS

For students ages 17-21  - Tuesdays  7:00 - 8:00 pm at  Lake Wilderness Lodge

This group is designed for students who have graduated high school and are in high school transitions programs. Students will learn basic social and musical skills as we move to music, explore percussion instruments, discover our singing voices and practice basic social skills through music. Our staff will work with parents, behavior therapists and caregivers to help each student succeed, and reinforce what the student is working on at home and in school.

Suggested prerequisites for participation*:
• Current or past experience in a group activity (i.e. school, church youth group, social skills group, etc.)

*These requirements are a guideline for participation.  Students who need additional assistance will be assessed for this group on a case by case basis.
