We will not be offering Beginning String Classes any longer. Should you like to get started on a stringed instrument, please contact Emily Malden for private or small group lessons.
We have a group for every student at every playing level. Our programs and schedules are designed to help students transition seamlessly and confidently to higher level playing groups as they develop their musical skills.
Jam Club - Special Needs Music Program
Jam Club is a Music Therapy based music education program designed with the cognitive and physical needs of special needs students in mind. This class will be led by MVYSO's own Music Therapist and Recreation Therapist and assisted by specially trained "Music Buddies." Students will work toward both musical and social goals and get the opportunity to perform special music pieces with MVYSO's Symphony Orchestra. For grades 2 - High School

Maple Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra Programs
This Orchestra is open to string players with 1-3 years of playing experience. Our string specialist will help students develop skills in playing independent parts in a music ensemble. This group has 2 concerts per season. Suggested Playing Level: ability to read key signatures: C,G,D,F, and B-flat as well as 4/4, 3/4, 2/4 time signatures and simple rhythms
- Mondays: 5:15 - 6:00 p.m.
This orchestra is open to string, brass, and woodwind players with 1-3 years of experience and string players with 2-4 years of playing experience. Musical goals include learning to play comfortably in sharp and flat key signatures with more complex rhythm patterns. Students will work in large group and wind/percussion and string sectionals in each rehearsal. This group has 2 concerts per season. Suggested playing level: ability to read and play music in C, 3 sharp and 3 flat key signatures, 4/4, 3/4, 2/4 and 6/8 time signatures. Ability to read and perform increasingly complex rhythm patterns.
- Mondays: 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.
This orchestra is open to string, brass, woodwind and percussion players with 3-5 years playing experience. Musical goals include improving pitch and rhythm accuracy in increasingly complex keys and rhythm patterns. Students will work in large group and sectionals in each rehearsal. This group has 3 concerts per season. Students with exemplary work ethic will be invited to audition for Tour Orchestra.
Suggested playing level: ability to read and play music in C, 4 sharp and 4 flat key signatures with increasingly complex rhythm patterns such as triplets and sixteenth patterns.
- Mondays: 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
This orchestra is open to string, brass, woodwind and percussion players with 4+ years playing experience who are looking for the challenge of performing master works of composers such as Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky. Students will work in large group and sectionals in each rehearsal. Symphony Orchestra performs 3 concerts per season as well as for several community based events. Symphony students are eligible for Tour Orchestra.
Suggested playing level: ability to read and play music in all key signatures and all rhythm patterns.
- Mondays: 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
MVYSO's Ambassador Ensembles are elite ensembles that meet for one hour before each symphony rehearsals. Ambassador ensembles learn what it's like to be "Gig" musicians as they often perform in the community for events where it is not feasible to have a full orchestra. Ambassador groups include:
- Elite Strings - for string players
- Elite Wind Quintet - for flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet and french horn
- Elite Brass Quintet - For brass players (starts in November)
- Ambassador ensembles meet on Mondays from 5:45 - 6:45 p.m.
- Must be a member of MVYSO
- Open auditions for Jr. Symphony & Symphony Players
- Signed commitment form required at the time of audition.
- Placement is based on audition and ability to commit to rehearsal and performance schedule

MVYSO's Tour Orchestra will represent the MVYSO and the community of Maple Valley in community based events such as the Opening Day of the Maple Valley Farmer's Market and Maple Valley's 4th of July Fireworks. Tour Orchestra will also represent MVYSO and our community on a 2 day bus tour or other travel. Rehearsals will be on Mondays from 7-9 p.m. following our regular season.
This internationally recognized exploratory music and movement class is offered by MVYSO's own registered Music Together Teacher. For grades Kindergarten through 2nd. This class is designed to prepare the student for a lifetime of music involvement in instrumental music, vocal music or dance.

The MVYSO offers 2 Summer Camp Programs each summer.
- Orchestra Camp - For grades 4 and up with at least one year of playing experience.
- Special Needs Music Camp - A music therapy based music education camp designed especially for students with special needs in grades 2 and up.
Down Beat Percussion Ensemble
New for the 2016-2017 Season! This class is designed for the budding percussionist or the student who is playing another instrument and would like to learn orchestral percussion. Students 5th grade and up will learn fundamental stick and mallet control and music reading skills. Students will be given professional instruction on orchestral percussion instruments & drum set. No musical experience is necessary. Students with musical experience will transition into other orchestra groups as they are ready and have the percussion skills to add to their musical ability. All students will have the opportunity to perform with orchestral groups.
- Mondays: 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.
